Internal Comms

So what's the best way of communicating internally? And by that I don't mean with those voices in your head, but with our current students, and staff. What works well? The web only? What's not so good anymore? Mass e-mail?

Many thanks for setting this group up Terry. I think it will be a popular one. I've invited a few people to the group already on the network who work in internal comms. I'm sure they'll invite more.

This looks like a great site and I'm really pleased to see an Internal Comms Group hopefully we can share some thoughts and experiences. I will try and think of some more HE IC people to invite...

Has anyone had difficulty in persuading colleagues in HR that a comprehensive internal comms audit is worthwhile? If so, how did you win the argument?

We are currently carrying out a review of internal comms at our Uni (Canterbury Christ Church). Looking for best practice examples and some willing volunteers to answer a few quick questions over the phone. If anyone thinks they can help it would be great to hear from you...

I have just removed the 'all staff email facility' for 112 staff members who had the power to send all staff emails about anything and everything! trust me it was anything and everything. I am waiting to receive hate mail!

Hi Ashar, did you get much hate mail? We did this a few years ago and I now send a weekly bulletin where I can filter all the anything-and-everythings that people request.

Not officially Sarah, but feedback from senior colleagues is; out of the 112, about 10-15 do now feel I am an uncompromising 'git'! Some have even gone as far as saying 'my job literally' depended on me sending 'all staff emails' I haven't the heart to respond to such statements.....needless to say we have begun to publish our own all staff e-zine on monthly basis..and other things aswell...

I'm looking to benchmarking our IC for the first time - do any of you do this and if so how - surveys, focus groups etc and how often? Do you find it a useful excercise and have the results made you change your approach to your IC?
